Outdoor Ceiling Fans: Their Purpose, Pleasures, and What You Need To Know About Them
Summer bliss in the South: On a warm summer night, you’re relaxing on your front porch or screened porch, deck or gazebo, veranda or cabana enjoying a perfectly chilled glass of white wine under the gentle breeze of an outdoor ceiling fan.
Because we can’t always count on Mother Nature to provide summer breezes, outdoor ceiling fans have been a practical way to cool outdoor spaces since the 1900s, especially in the South and other warm climates. Just as indoor fans contribute to the comfort of your home, outdoor ceiling fans are amazing at keeping porches and patios cool during the summer. They have a cooling effect on even the most stifling and stagnant of days, effectively extending the amount of time you can comfortably spend outdoors.
Before you purchase one, however, there are certain things you must know.
First and foremost is the fact is that indoor-only ceiling fans cannot be used outdoors. Indoor/outdoor ceiling fans are made to withstand the elements (humidity, for example), which indoor ceiling fans can’t handle. At least not for long. The blades are “all-weather,” the finishes stop corrosion and rust, and the motor casings feature waterproof seals that protect the motors from moisture.
Outdoor ceiling fans should complement your home’s style and appearance and enhance your outdoor space’s ambiance. You’ll also want to choose your fan, or fans, based on the size of the outdoor space and the ceiling height. The size of the space will determine the blade span and number of blades. Ceiling height will determine how high to hang your outdoor fan.
Since we love all things modern at Trig Modern, two of our favorite outdoor ceiling fan vendors, which we proudly represent in our showroom, are The Modern Fan Company and Minka Aire.
The Modern Fan Company introduced modern design to this often overlooked product. (Believe it or not, ceiling fans do not have to be traditional.) The company’s designers celebrate the modern idiom through mechanical simplicity, geometric forms, and contemporary finishes, creating outdoor ceiling fans that will be relevant years from now as they are today.
Minka Aire utilizes form, function and modern design to embody “the art of air management.” It's outdoor ceiling fans continue to receive rave reviews from proud owners, such as: “In Hawaii, we know fans. This one rocks and it's gorgeous. I recommend this highly!”
Since there is a host of issues to consider before you buy an outdoor ceiling fan, why not come into the Trig Modern showroom and let us help you? We have fans from both of these vendors (and more) for you to see in person and access to the companies’ catalogs if you want to see more.
Summer bliss is waiting for you at Trig Modern.
